There are opportunities EVERYWHERE. Computers open the whole wide world to possibilities. Local flea markets mean that anyone can start their own businesses. You don't have to have lots of money to start your own money makeing venture.
I've been teaching for over 40 years, and the general belief is that YOU HAVE TO HAVE ENDLESS MONEY BEFORE YOU CAN OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS. This is a huge MYTH!
We are now in sort of a depression, but new ventures are rare. Flea markets are empty in some places. You would think that when there are spaces in cheap markets, then people out of work would start renting, and moving their ideas. Other people's ideas are a waste of time -- if you have to pay money to acquire their franchise or idea. MAKE UP YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
I have recently taught a business English class to college juniors. I made them think up business plans, and write them up. They had few original ideas, and wrote them up kicking and screaming. THEY ALL WANT TO WORK FOR SOMEONE ELSE. Most business majors NEVER think of themselves as anything by employees.
Dear Ray, how right you are. I am a big believer in making up your own idea and working like hell to get the venture off the ground instead of paying for a franchise for example. I found your comment interesting that the college juniors wanted to work for someone else when in reality working for someone else is the least secure thing anyone can do. This was a little surprising to me but I think it maybe because the college students might think it is hard to start a venture in a major recession. (Oh, I forgot, I think we are supposed to be coming out of it soon. :-)
I have written a book, (soon to be published) called Entrepreneur Myths and I think you're right on the money when you say that you need endless money to start a business is a myth. What a major myth it is for sure.
