I’ve heard this statement by investors more than I care to admit – regardless of the market sector, including the movie business. Good ideas are not easy to come by. If you’re an entrepreneur that has come up with one, guard your idea as if it’s your own life. Don’t let some mother f%4ker steal it from you.

I’m flabbergasted when I see entrepreneurs share their ideas with strangers or potential investors as if they’ve got 100 more good ideas in their cranium – and they can just think of them instantly in case their current idea is not workable or fundable.

I’ve learned the hard way to share my ideas with others cautiously. I’ve had my ideas ripped off before as well. When I’ve looked at investing into ventures, I’ve always been respectful of the concept of “idea generation.” It’s not as easy as some investors might claim. I’ve heard many tell me that ideas are a “dime a dozen.”

I’ve had investors downplay my idea in order to get leverage. My first thought is, “If it’s that easy to come up with good ideas, then why don’t you f&%king think of them, bitch?”
It’s all so easy to play the “devil’s advocate” when it comes to ideas. Years ago, I had a partner who was absolutely fu%king fantastic at playing the “devil’s advocate” on any idea I came up with. My partner never took the time to come up with ideas but loved to find flaws with the ideas I came up with. I don’t mind anyone providing feedback to my ideas but please don’t just knock it down – try to improve it or provide some solid advice. I got tired of having to come up with all the ideas and that partnership, luckily for me, went away.

Don’t downplay the power of ideas. They’re not easy to come by and good ideas are not a dime a dozen. For instance, I’ve gone through hundreds of movie script ideas to come up with 21 sound ones… so far. We’ve written these scripts and we have 50 more sound ideas to consider but the process of coming up with a great idea is fuzzy, unpredictable, chaotic and at times difficult.

Your mind is a complex, adaptive, non-linear system. There are days when my mind flows with so many ideas that I have difficulty writing them fast enough. But on some days, you have to get into the idea zone, which is a topic for further consideration.

Treat your ideas with the utmost respect. Yes, ideas have to be turned into reality but never forget ideation is an unpredictable process. You never know when you’re going to come up with the “big” idea.
